Rugby match goes to Pegasus Palmerians
10:00am Thursday 12th September 2013 in Sport
RUGBY: PEGASUS registered a 27-5 victory over Barking’s third string at the weekend.
Peg took on a club side made up of 1sts and 2nds along with some vets with the main aim to gain match fitness.
The starting line up looked very unfamiliar, as Pegasus mixed senior players with new recruits.
And this showed in a very scrappy first quarter where handling errors and a few missed tackles allowed Barking to take a 5-0 lead as they broke off the back of a well worked attacking scrum.
It took the Herd Lane boys a little while to settle, but then the Pegasus pack began to take control, putting Barking on the backfoot. The pack started to make yards into their opponents half, led by the impressive Neil Brown.
It was through his strong aggressive power-play style running, which allowed Tom Hughes to score his first of his hat-trick of tries.
Debutant Michael Barker opened the structured Barking defence line on more than one occasion and winger James Polelack touched down in the corner.
One final score before half time by Hughes and the try of the afternoon – an inside reverse pass from Bramwell to flanker Broad – gave him a free run to the line and eventually Hughes gave Peg the 17-5 lead.
A very solid and controlled second half gave Pegasus two further tries.
Robert Broad got himself in on the scoreboard late on. He crashed over the line from five metres out – finishing off great attacking sequence from the pack. The final try of the match saw a strong Pegasus attack get tne ball to the on-form Hughes who touched down to secure his hat-trick.
