Thurrock CC first string celebrate promotion
12:00pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in Sport
CRICKET: THURROCK’s first string secured promotion to the Premier Division of the T Rippon Mid Essex League with a comprehensive 133 run over an already relegated Little Waltham side. Thurrock posted 344-6 and their rivals were dismissed for just 211.
Home skipper Nick Henry elected to bat first on a good track and after the early loss of opener Mason Wren for four, debutant opener Dean Henry and brother Nick proceeded to take on the visitors’ bowling in determined fashion as the brothers put on 224 for the second wicket before Dean fell for an excellent 72. Nick Henry went to his third league 100 of the season before eventually falling for a quickfire 133. All-rounder Danny Laird got in on the action with a well-made 68 as the hosts posted 344 off their 45 overs.
Opening bowler Madder struck two early blows and Laird one to leave the visitors on the rack at 29 for three. The fourth wicket pair of Mahmood (41) and Nasir put on 61 to bring the visitors back into the game before Andrew Hills (2-17) removed Nasir LBW for 21 with Mahmood then bowled by Rob Neal the very next over. Ruffle (39) and Fell (34) helped the visitors past the 200 mark before Clarke Wren (2/27) wrapped up the game and spark the promotion celebrations that lasted long into the evening.
