DENNIS Cross was the first Thurrock athlete to cross the line in the second running of the Mel Batty 10km in Grays on Sunday.
The race, held to remember the former Harrier great Batty, who was a former world 10-mile record holder, saw 132 competitors finish and was won by Dartford’s Ben Louch in 32m 48s.
The first woman to cross the finishing line on Harriers’ track at Blackshots was Southend AC’s Kerry Holland in a course record of 38m 33s, which was one minute quicker than what she set in winning the race last year.
Under-20 athlete Cross, a former Thurrock Harrier, finished in a big personal best time of 34m 45s.
Not far behind in seventh place was his former team-mate and first Thurrock Harrier Scott Rice in 36m 5s who took the V40 prize, with Don Lawless the next home for the host club in 13th (38m 17s).
Meanwhile, the indestructable Pat Dobbs finished in 93rd place which was good enough to take the trophy in the 70+ section.
An outstanding performance came from Jodi Farrell who was 49th overall, 10th lady with a time of 44m 38s, which was three minutes faster than her previous best.
There was a plethora of PBs from other Harriers. Mark Cable’s breakthrough run of 39m 31s took 17th place, while Martin Mack 40m 40s (24th), Nick Trencher 40m 52s (26th), Gary Cahill's 42m 51s (40th), Ian Scott 46m 31s (55th) all had encouraging personal bests.
The Tobins, Mark and Anthony, had good runs to secure top 20 places. The lady’s team consisted of Sam Tuck 47m 46s (65th) and Victoria Peacock 49m 25s (76th) who with Jodi Farrell finished in third place.
A good contingent of Thurrock Nomads also toed the start line at Blackshots with David Sprinham their first man home in 44m 27s.
Terry Meadows (46m 52s), Bettina Maccariello (49m 40s), Ceri Armstrong (52m 24s), Mark Anthony (55m 16s), Robert Teer (55m 26s) and Graham Griffin (56m 45s) rounded off the Nomads team.
