Holland penalty claims it for Aveley
4:25pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Sport
A BILLY Holland penalty 10 minutes from time was all that separated Aveley and Romford at a sodden Mill Field on Saturday afternoon.
The midfielder slotted home for Aveley after a late handball gave Justin Gardner’s side the three points in a match of few chances for either team.
Gardner and his opposite number, Paul Martin, had their goalkeepers to thank for keeping things level before the break.
First Romford’s Aaron Omand – a first half substitute for the injured Atu Ngoy – brilliantly kept out Shane Oakley when it looked easier to score. Soon after Aveley’s Jack Giddens got the better of Ryan Lambert, tipping his rasping effort around the post.
As the rain came down in the second half late tackles started flying in as the referee’s notebook began to fill, with goal-scoring chances becoming few and far between.
But with the sides looking like they were going to share the points, referee James Whittaker awarded the home side a penalty after a handball by Romford captain Paul Clayton.
Holland duly accepted the invitation to side-foot the ball into the roof of the net to make it four wins from five for the Millers.
Aveley: Giddens, Kallon, Nesbitt, Flanagan, Thomas, Hopkins (Wall 68), Okwera, Holland (c), Oakley (Stephenson 59), Yao (Jama 64), Appiah.
