Promotion hunting Pegs frustrated by rain
4:21pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Sport
PEGASUS & Corringham were left cursing their luck after rain washed out their match against Old Parks.
Paul Bennett’s team were sixth in the SNEL Division Three table but only 17 points adrift of the second automatic promotion spot.
Pegs had hoped a win over third-placed Old Parks would be the perfect springboard for an assault on promotion.
But the Corringham team have not given up hope of moving up to Division Two.
“We needed to win because we are 17 points away from promotion so we really needed to play our last three games to stand any chance of going up,” said Bennett.
“It is a massive blow for us. We now have to win both our remaining games and hope that the teams above us lose a game.
“Old Parks are a good team but we still needed to beat them and get the 20 points to close the gap on the promotion places.
“If we can pick up two more wins we cannot do any more and then we will have to see what happens because it will be a lottery.”
Pegasus face Woodford Green and Harlow Town in the final two fixtures, with both teams below Bennett’s side in the table.
Pegs will be at full strength for the visit of Woodford Green on Saturday with the exception of number five batsman Danny Crow.
The match between the two earlier this season was abandoned due to rain with Pegs on 101-3.
“We looked comfortable at that stage and I believe that once we get them down to the Peg we can get a win,” Bennett added.
“But we are not going into it thinking that it is a given that we will win. The boys will still have to work hard.
“Everyone is focussed and the team spirit is great. We all went back to the clubhouse on Saturday and watched the football.
“There was a club twenty20 day on Sunday and that helped keep everyone match ready for the weekend.”
