York Hall win for Thurrock pro fighter

BOXING: MATT McCarthy cruised through his bout against Danny Donovitch at York Hall on Sunday afternoon.

The former Chadwell St Mary ABC fighter, who turned pro last year, breezed through the six two minute rounds – putting his rival on the canvas in the fifth round and easily getting the decision. His trainer, Mark Bates said: “Matt is a quality fighter and his confidence is pretty high after this one.

“If there was a problem, it was that Matt didn’t think that he had had enough of a work-out in this fight.

“I think that I’m going to have to step him up a bit and find some tougher opponents for him,” he added.

McCarthy is pencilled in for a four round contest to be held at Grays Civic Hall on May 18.

But his trainer is keen to try and squeeze in another fight between then and now, partly because the weekend bout did not push the well known local boxer enough.
