Michael Spillane wants to get cracking at Roots Hall

FOOTBALL: Maldon & Tiptree manager Terry Spillane is tipping his nephew Michael to be a success at Southend United.

Blues signed the midfielder from League Two rivals Dagenham & Redbridge last week and his uncle said Spillane cannot wait to get cracking at Roots Hall.

“There were another couple of sides he could have gone to but he was very impressed with Southend,” said Terry Spillane. “He said they’re the best side he’s played against this season and really likes the manager, Paul Sturrock. “He loved his time at Dagenham. He took a gamble and it paid off, but now he can’t wait to get going at Southend. “Ironically, the side they’re playing on Saturday are one of the others he spoke to, but once he’d met Mr Sturruck he was only ever going to join Southend.”

And the boss of the Ryman One North leaders added: “Now he just wants to enjoy his football and I’m sure he can go on to become the footballer I know he can be. “I’m confident he’ll fulfil his potential with Southend. “Personally, I’ve got a good feeling about this move because I know what a good club he’s joining.”
