Thurrock sporting cash allocations revealed

SPORT: THURROCK Sports Council has revealed the cash allocations it has made at the end of last year and the beginning of 2013.

And several of the borough’s best known and most established clubs have benefitted from the organisation’s generosity.

The council’s Glenda Stephens said the money allocated spanned a wide range of sports and would help hundreds of individuals.

“The Sports Council funds are obtained as a grant from Thurrock Council. Grants are used to grant aid or sponsor affiliated Thurrock sports clubs or individuals with the main focus being on coaching. At the end of last year £1,700 went to the Thurrock Primary Schools football team to help fund their Jersey trip.

A total of £734 went to Grays-based Thurrock Lawn Tennis Club with the club intent on buying new coaching equipment as they attempt to bring more people and young people into the sport in the borough.

The Thurrock Harriers’ coffers were boosted to the tune of £180 which went to hep fund key field judging courses.

The cash has already helped the club which is one of the most respected in south Essex.

And only this week the Sports Council has contributed £354 to sponsor the South Essex Cricket Board’s development of Ladies Cricket. The cash will be used for a for a 6 a-side tournament.

A £500 grant has been made to Thurrock Hockey Club to pay for 10 members to attend an umpiring course.

And £900 went to Thurrock Rugby Club to pay two coaches a day for five days for their Get Started Programme. Coaches are required to support a programme run with the Princes Trust for unemployed people between 16 and 25 years.
