Aveley edge victory

Sudbury 2

Aveley 3

NON LEAGUE: JORDAN Cox bagged a brace as Aveley got back to winning ways at Sudbury.

Winger Junior Dadson got the third goal with 20 minutes left to play as Millers brought to an end their run of three defeats.

The win returned Millers to the thick of their pre-Christmas play-off hunt - after a dodgy festive run had seen them drop to sixth spot.

But they now sit fourth, six points behind second placed Heybridge Swifts with two games in hand over the north Essex high-fliers.

Justin Gardner, the Millers manager, was frustrated following the first half that he described as “the worst he’d ever seen”, but moved to applaud his side’s second half fight and spirit.

Cox gave the visitors the lead four minutes before half time. After a superb first touch, the Millers’ top scorer saw his shot deflected into the back of the net.

James Baker drew the home side level just before half-time however, scoring from a corner that should never have been given.

Aveley began the second half well, with Dadson creating two good chances. But a mix-up between centre-half Luke Wilson and goal-keeper Andre Foster gifted Sudbury the lead. Wilson had expected Foster to come for a long ball and when he didn’t, Sudbury striker Leon Antoine nicked in to score the Yellow’s second.

Their lead lasted just four minutes though, as Cox rose highest to head home an Alfred Kamara cross. That was the striker’s 13th goal of the season.

That was to be his last input in the game, though, as injury forced Gardner to replace him with Paul Burnett. But within two minutes of coming on, the nippy winger had set up Aveley’s winner. He crossed to the back post where Junior Dadson was on hand to tap home and seal a superb turnaround victory for Millers.

Aveley: Foster; Sands, Kamara, Sonuga (Stevenson 69’), Wilson; Hopkins, Leader, Holland (c), Cox (Burnett 65’), Dadson, Elbi
