CRICKET: Orsett cricket club achieved their first win of the current indoor cricket season when they defeated Thurrock "B" by twelve runs in a keenly contested fixture at Grays School. Cayman Lane led the way for the victors with an undefeated 25 while Joe Pumfrett gave valuable support with a dozen runs as Orsett closed on an impressive 98 for the loss of just one wicket. But Thurrock "B" made a strong chase through Joshua Girling with 22 runs and Luke Phillips with 16. But Rajan Kular picked up two vital wickets at a cost of 23 runs as Orsett edged home with Thurrock closing on 86 for the loss of three wickets. Earlier, Phillips had taken the lone Orsett wicket to fall at an expense of 17 runs. The winning margin was smaller still when Thurrock "A" met Stanford le Hope in the following game. Thurrock "A" batted first and made 73-3, for whom Joshua Clarke impressed with 27 not out while Tom Redman contributed 14 runs in the face of tight bowling from two Michaels - Pearn and Edwards - who took one wicket each. After the break, left-hander Edwards played many confident cover drives in accumulating a fine 24, but his Stanford team were dismissed for 68, with the pick of the Thurrock "A" bowlers being Aaron Palmer, Reid Watson and Joe Surrey collecting one wicket each at a cost of just two, five and 19 runs respectively. The evening's final match saw Thurrock "C" post a creditable 42 all out in reply to high-flying Basildon and Pitsea's score of 138 for the loss of one wicket. Jamie Flaim top scored for Thurrock with 12 runs while Travis Singleton and Charlie Blerkom were both undefeated for Basildon and Pitsea with 30 and 26 respectively. Lewis Evans picked up the lone Basildon and Pitsea wicket to fall at a cost of 19 runs. This week's fixtures (Friday 16th November): 6pm - Stanford le Hope v. Thurrock "B"; 7pm - Thurrock "A" v Belhus "A"; 8pm - Basildon and Pitsea v. Belhus "B".
