Waltham Abbey 1, Tilbury 0

(Match abandoned)

VIOLENCE flared in Saturday's Ryman Division One North clash at Waltham Abbey, with the referee abandoning the match with 15 minutes to go as he could not guarantee the safety of the players.

It is the second successive season that this fixture has ended ugly scenes, last year the match ended early with goalkeeper Brad King suffering a fractured jaw after a confrontation which saw spectators involved, and this time supporters are believed to have attacked a Tilbury player.

Last year the result stood and there were no repercussions but this time it likely the FA mount an investigation.

There seemed little hint of the drama that was to follow during the match, which was played out in relatively good humour.

Tilbury started brightly and after four minutes came close to scoring when Kurt Smith's cross-come-shot was pushed over the bar by keeper John Hickman.

Dockers had an even better chance to score on 14 minutes when Luke Stanley's cross was handballed by David Avres. Stanley took the kick himself but Hickman made an excellent diving save.

The visitors continued to hold the advantage and when a trademark Lloyd Anthony long throw caused Erkan Yusef volleyed over.

But against the run of play on 42 minutes Abbey took the lead. There appeared to be little danger when Matthew Attard punted the ball forward, but Jay Taylor misjudged its flight and keeper Paul Agu came out of his box to retrieve the situation, only for the ball to roll between his legs and present the Abbots' debutant Dean Perry with the chance to roll the ball into an empty net.

Just before half time there as almost a instant reply, but Kurt Smith's shot was saved by Hickman to cap an outstanding first half for former Hornchuch keeper.

In their last match Abbey conceded eight goals and they were determined to keep a clean sheet this time - fighting a staunch rearguard action for much of the second half.

Tilbury threw plenty at them, including substitutes Andre Humphrey and new signing Chris Stowe - who has joined from Concord Rangers where he netted ten goals this season - but they couldn't find a way through.

And when they did, Hickman was in great form, pulling off another fine stop to deny Kurt Smith's well struck free kick.

It was on a rare break on 75 minutes that the trouble erupted after a rash challenge deep in his own half by Anthony on Marc Sontag. The two players got into a scuffle on the floor and Anthony lost his cool, striking out at the Abbey player.

That prompted Sontag's brother Lee to race across the pitch and land a haymaker on Anthony and a melee ensued.

Referee Lloyd Wood sorted it out, first sending off Anthony and then Lee Sontag, who raced after the Tilbury youngster and followed him into the dressing room, where an altercation broke out, Anthony emerging covered in blood and clearly dazed.

Further ugly scenes followed as players and club officials from boths side got involved.

Mr Wood sent both teams to the dressing room and, after consulting with the FA, announced the match had been abandoned.

Tilbury: Paul Agu, Danny Smith, Lloyd Anthony, Nathan Philip, Marc Clarey, Erkan Yusuf (Andre Humphrey), James Twist, Jay Taylor, Babatunde Olagumju (Chris Stowe), Luke Stanley, Kurt Smith.

same old same old waltham abbey! maybe the FA will do something this time, because the ref this time actually saw something, their player should have been done for assault last season!Something needs to be done about this team and quick, although a broken jaw ten broken teeth and a cut needing 20stitches went unpunished I doubt anything will be done this time.

I just hope that the Ryman League observer who was standing near me and witnessed everything that went on with same old waltham abbey. Their supporters attacking a Tilbury player as he walked to the dressing room.Do the right thing and chuck them out of the league its no more than the animals of Waltham Abbey deserve.

I dont have a clue what you refer to regards eton manor, but speaking from experience

I have never been to watch any team play the abbey without an 'incident' of some kind, maybe its time for the fa to step in and ask questions of the club, but if its true as the above quote said they didnt enquire after the well being of the player badly hurt maybe they are condoning the actions of some of their players and spectators.

The abbey player was first down the tunnel - shortly followed by the tilbury player and his father - then a mass of people. Stupid foul started this hole mess

You know its amazing a 'stupid foul' should be the reason an abbey players brother ran on and attacked the tilbury player in the first place, just as well tilbury didnt respond in the same manner when there keeper had his jaw broken by a 'stupid foul'. Where does this stop, I heard it lucky the boys father follwed him to make sure he was ok to find changing rooms were locked and he had to stop abbey fans/players beating his son up. Hopefully the ryman official at the game will put the records straight.

I was told it was the Tilbury left back that punched the floored abbey player in the face after a foul was given that started the trouble....

Im the goalkeeper who had his jaw broken in 2 places and 10 smashed teeth due to a late 2 footed tackle into my face. I expect to get injured at times as thats football but the waltham abbey player was a coward. The player in question denny webb or w.abbey didnt even make contact after the incident even though I was in harlow hosp for 2 days. watham abbey are a disgrace and I hope the FA invesigates it properly before anyone else is seriously injured. Im now longer playing and £2k out of pocket due to dental treatment.

Oh so that was the reason neither club or player bothered to see how brad was, that makes it okay then does it?. Get real mate, the facts are starting to build against abbey. Would just like to point out that the tilbury side that were at the abbey last week were a completely different side nto last season and that includes the manager! Surely if you are a supporter of football cannot condone biting and stamping on players. On or off the pitch.

After having a look through the waltham abbey programme i notice that the two brothers who were involved Lee Sontag and Marc Sontag also have a 'Sontag'a G.Sontag as a hon life member and a G Sontag sitting on the Waltham Abbey committee.Maybe that is why the players have such a blaise attitude because they have representation on the Waltham Abbey committee who I have no doubt back them like Marc felt he had to back his brother after lloyd was bit and he ran over to defenceless lloyd and punched him in the face when he had nothing whatsoever to do with the initial incident.

this would explain why the club keep getting away with their appalling antics, lets hope the matter is taken further this time by the FA they should be kicked out of the league and sooner rather than later! Lets hope there no Mr sontag on the board of the FA..

Your damned if you do and your damned if you don't....

I just will put the record straight on one thing here, WAFC Secretary spoke to Tilbury Secretary last year in depth and asked on behlaf of the club how the goalkeeper was. This is a FACT. If the Secretary does not convey this, thats his problem. This is just one incident here where everyone is jumping to conclusions and blaming one party. I suspect almost all the comments made here are by people who were not even at these games and have no idea of the truth and what has happened.

Please don't ask me to explain anything else, use your intelligence. PS I won't be returning so don't bother requesting anything further. Just have a little think before you all engage the grey matter.....

I find most of the comments hear very amusing - especially Mrs King who obviously has not got over the accident to her son. Just for the record, it was an accident and I know for a fact, Tilbury were contacted to find out how he was.
