THE head of Essex Police Authority has said more backroom jobs may have to go.
Chairman Robert Chambers spoke after Prime Minister David Cameron met the chief constables of every force in England and Wales to discuss how constabularies could save money.
Mr Chambers said he understood the need to reduce costs to help reduce the country’s ballooning budget deficit, but reassured residents the county’s front-line officers would stay.
He said: “The police authority currently employs 3,621 officers and we don’t intend to lose a single one.
“Policing has got to do its bit to help save money and we are quite prepared for that, but the bobby on the beat is the absolute bedrock of policing.“ Essex Police are saving about £4million a year by sharing resources with Kent Police.
Mr Chambers said collaboration would continue, but admitted it could lead to more redundancies in office-based staff.
