ONE of the oldest appointments in the country has been filled for the 830th time in Essex.

The new High Sheriff of Essex, Michael Hindmarch, swore in his declarations at a ceremony held at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday.

He is the 830th High Sheriff of Essex, a role which has been in existence for more than 1,000 years.

The High Sheriff’s role, which is unpaid, is to applaud, appreciate, enthuse and reward volunteers who help in the community.

Mr Hindmarch said: “I am looking forward to my year as High Sheriff and to travelling to all corners of Essex to meet the committed and dedicated people that are running charities and voluntary organisations in their local communities.”

Mr Hindmarch has worked as a director of a number of companies in both the private and public sectors in the fields of industry, retail and the media.
