THE weekend proved to be a busy one for Orsett in Bloom supporters with two spring launch events.

On Saturday about 30 children attended the village school where they made mini scarecrows.

The children will now have to look after them until July when they will be judged during Orsett's annual scarecrow festival.

On Sunday the annual Spring Launch was held at the village hall where more than 100 residents took shelter from the hot weather to be entertained by Kelly Fiford with a flower arranging demonstration and by Brian Taylor with a presentation on Belmont Allotments Association's community gardening projects.

Kelly, who has demonstrated her skills at the Chelsea Flower Show, stunned the audience with her wonderful arrangements.

Brian's presentation was about the award winning allotments and wildlife garden which are visited by many local schools and children's groups.

The event also included Orsett in Bloom's auction, which included Kelly's beautiful creations and items generously donated by local residents and businesses.

Auctioneer Howard Shaw was assisted by Frank Harrison and Adrian Short and the Orsett WI provided the much needed refreshments.

The event raised £1,000, which will be used for gardening projects and providing summer bedding for 50 barrels around the village.

Orsett in Bloom's next events will be the Gardens Open Day on Sunday, July 13 part of the scarecrow festival weekend.

T hey are also entering the Anglia in Bloom competition and are hoping for Gold for the fourth year running."
