There are other ways to recycle

WITH reference to K Wingrave’s letter, it is a shame Thurrock Council seems unable to recycle plastic bags, but it is an even greater shame it continues to be supplied by shops and accepted by customers when so many cheap, re-usable cotton or hessian bags are available which will last for years.

I keep three cheap containers in the kitchen and simply tip sorted rubbish loose into the appropriate council bins and vegetable waste on to the compost heap.

I always carry my re-usable bags with me when shopping. They are more aesthetically pleasing and furthermore, don’t cut into your arm as plastic does.

So you can get away without using any plastic bags at all and make the binmen happy (or maybe not, as they will be emptying more bins).

This planet, land and ocean, is being blighted by plastic waste. It would be good if we could, as a population, address this and perhaps, make a difference. – MARIAN MESTANEK, Stanford-le-Hope.
