Politicians must take a look at themselves

SO Peter Saunders feels that the recent low turnout at the local elections is due to people who don’t care or are “closet Thatcherites”.
Perhaps those involved with political parties need to look closer to home for the reasons behind this.
Many people I meet from all walks of life do care about their community and those within it.
What they do not care about is the political system and those who are part of it.
Recent years have seen many politicians lose all respectability in the eyes of the public, with expenses scandals (both national and local), broken promises and the perception that many are only involved for their own self benefit.
In short, many politicians are viewed with at best distrust and at worst contempt.
Just the last few years of Thurrock Council has seen the constant internal battling and shifting of power within the parties.
It is a great shame that so many feel this way, but it is the politicians who need to look at themselves and ways of rebuilding their links with the electorate if we are to see any increase in turnout at local elections. – STEPHEN BONNINGTON, Hope Avenue, Stanford-le-Hope.
