Polling station move was a mistake
1:14pm Wednesday 16th May 2012 in Letters to the Editor
CONSIDERING the abysmal turn-out at local elections in this borough, whose brainwave was it to hire Thurrock Garden Centre as the Belhus ward polling station, instead of using the Tamarisk Road Scout hut (and in the process depriving the Scouts of the fee)?
It was totally inconvenient, even to us able-bodied souls, let alone the poor wheelchair bound chap we met en route, to have to hike the length of the garden centre, and vote in what was surely a container.
The polling officers were frozen, but still in good spirits, and the long walk would surely have put off a good deal of older people.
The garden centre was open for business as usual, so I have to ask myself (and the council), do politics and business really mix? – WENDY BLACKSHAW, Cruick Avenue, South Ockendon.
