Why am I waiting?

HAVING been on the property list for five years, and been born and educated in Thurrock, I would have thought I would be closer to the top by now.

In Tilbury there has been a number of properties that have been empty for eight months-plus. Every day I go through Tilbury and notice more empty properties.

Can someone please explain why the local people are pushed aside to accommodate other people who have no bearing on this borough?

There should be a way of gaining ownership of these properties that have been left unoccupied.

It is astounding the council has not implemented anything for local people to get housing quicker than outsiders from other boroughs and countries.

This system is supposed to have been shaken up and sorted, so why am I still having to pay private rental, which takes up to two thirds of my income each month, to live in the same borough as I was born in? – NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED.

I can fully relate to this as I am in the same situation. I was born in Thurrock and all my family have lived here all our lives. I was told when I went to the council 4/5 years ago that I had no chance of getting a council property and should rent privately. I am regularly at about number 50ish in the queue when I bid for a property. I am a single mum working 5 days a week yet, as like you I do not see much of my own money as it goes on private rent and bills. I went to them a while ago asking why I was a bronze and was told I was adequately housed for my needs.

The current system is very unfair. Local people who have been waiting don't stand a chance. The council have just spent a fortune completely redoing a lovely big 3 bed semi detached house adjoining mine, new kitchen, bathroom etc, etc. I will be very interested to see who is moved in there. Bet its not a hard working local family who have been waiting for a council home!
