Police must do more to restore our faith

MUCH has been said about the recent council tax hike to cover increased police costs. Although I support and respect the rank and file police officers, the basic fact is the police in our area are pretty much ineffective and people will naturally resent paying for something which does not live up to expectations.

You only have to read this newspaper to discover how much crime there is in our borough.

Despite the ever-increasing police budget, there are many people who simply do not feel safe in their own neighbourhoods anymore.

We feel our property and our lives are at risk and we are not being properly protected.

Do the police really need quite so many high-powered cars? Is that helicopter really the best way to spend their cash?

When was the last time you saw a constable walk down your road?

Chances are it’s so long ago that you can’t remember. Throwing money at a problem does not mean that the problem will be solved. Perhaps its time for the police to join the rest of us in credit-crunch Britain and manage their finances more efficiently. – SIMON LOWES, Darnley Road, Grays.
