Out of trim in North Stifford

I DO not like to open old wounds, but I cannot hold back my anger any longer.

I live in the High road of North Stifford village. Myself, along with other fellow villagers have taken to much criticism of late regarding the traffic calming measures introduced by our duly elected council.

Recently I was following one of those 4x4 Vehicles by the width restriction from the village. The driver misjudged the size of his car and hit the raised kerb.

This caused one of his wheel trims to come off, and also a section of the exhaust pipe fell off.

Both these items were in the middle of the road.

The driver stopped, got out of his car, looked at the pieces of debris in the road, and after muttering something unrepeatable, drove off.

This made me very cross indeed because it was left to me (a villager!) to get out of my car in the pouring rain and clear up this gentleman's mess.

Perhaps the moral of this story is that anyone driving an overly large car should think twice before entering our village and possibly damaging their vehicle and our peaceful environment.

Mary Collier MD (Retired),

High Road, North Stifford.

Mary, why did you have to get out of your car and clear the mess? Surely your duly elected council could have cleared it for you thus saving you a villager!, the need to soil your hands on such an incliment day. Or alternatively could you explain the need for the chicane that sits at the end of your peaceful village, instead of just an ordinary width restriction?

Clearly this is madness. Some loony at the council has made a public road, very difficult for memebrs of the public, like myself who pay their insurance and road tax, by putting what is effectively an obstacle on a public road through your village. HAd this monstrosity not ben constructed their would have been no debris.

so, at night, how well is this "obstacle" lit ?

let's wait and see for the long-awaited major collision at this crazy road setup.......then we can see what the vlliagers do then

Drivers in general dont seem to have the time to make the manouvre carefully, thats the idea to slow traffic down, I do agree it is a bit OTT,the debris around the narrowing prove many drivers are have difficulty getting through it.

To the many drivers who take the pee, by nipping through the bus lane, often undertaking cars in the narrowing, so for you Welling 57 these occasions are the accidents waiting to happen.

The police often mount vigil and do 'nick' offenders.

Bill I don't think Mary was bothered about removing the left behinds, more the fact she was safeguarding other road users.

Fred is wrong. It isn't there to "slow traffic down", it's a width restriction so that the precious residents don't have to put up with large trucks going through their village.

Also the drivers who use the bus lane aren't "taking the pee", just being sensible in order to avoid damaging their vehicles.

As for the police mounting vigils, thank God Thurrock is such a crime free paradise that they can make this one of their higher priorities...

If the old dear who wrote the original letter really thinks that the endless stream of vehicles that bounce through her village every day constitutes a "peaceful environment" then she really should see a doctor, or at least get her sight and hearing tested!

WELL SAID PAUL!!!
I agree completeyl and Fred, if Mary wasnt bothered about clearing away the debris why did she mention that it was"left to me (a villager!) to get out of my car in the pouring rain and clear up". Maybe if all the debris is left long enough our wonderful council will paint it white and use it as another miniroundabout.

Whoever thought of putting all those humps etc in North Stifford must have been sitting on their brains.
Excesive pollution is expelled from vehicles into the local area because you have to slow down into a lower gear, therefore more exhaust fumes are expelled into the locality. To make maters worse they add a chicane.
Not very bright are they.

For years I wondered who lives/lived in N Stifford to have the clout to make the council and remember it was the last council that put these humps, bumpss in initially.
What I want to know is which moron thought that speed humps on a hill, ie the one leading to/from the Mardyke, was a sensible idea. All in all someone in N Stifford has got someone or plural in/on the council in their pockets.
The main problem as with most of Thurrock the actual road and before that planning has and no doubt continue to be attrocious, in the lack of vision given that it is destined to become a housing estate.
Also Mary on the odd occasion I have gone through the hell hole your village is, due to the humps and bumps, I'm sure I have seen several of "those 4*4" and other what I would regard as overly large vehicles, parked on driveways etc.

I wonder what your view of these overly large vehicles would be if they were an ambulance or fire engine, coming to your aid or using it as a short cut to Ockendon etc, but delayed and or damaged and unable to attend, due to the stupid chicance nonsense. One would hope your conscience would be clear in such a case.
To be frank if it's so bad, move.

a lot of people will not go through North Stifford because of the ramps, are they trying to stop people going through the village because in that case I would love ramps put down the road I live in as traffic uses that as a short cut.

As I drove home via North Stifford (in my 4x4) tonight, I wondered if these traffic calming measures had had any affect on the volume of traffic as there seems to be just as much as pre-traffic calming measures. Spartacus - councillors used to live in this area - (I'm not sure if they still do however) hence the special treatment.
