THURROCK PROBUS CLUB
12:54pm Wednesday 25th July 2012 in Club Call
PRESIDENT John Illing extended a warm welcome to the 25 members in attendance at its July meeting held at the Masonic Hall, Lenthall Avenue, Grays.
The meeting stood in silence for one minute in memory of long standing member, Kenneth Reynolds, who passed away on Monday, June 25.
In accordance with the family’s wishes it was unanimously agreed to make a donation to the Essex Air Ambulance Service in Kenneth’s memory.
Following lunch and formal business the meeting enjoyed a talk, illustrated by slides, by Tricia Gurnett on the Palace of Westminster.
Tricia told of the history of the various palaces that have stood on the site, from medieval times through to the 1840 creation by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin that stands on the site today.
She also talked of the way government business is conducted within the palace.
Secretary Trevor Peters proposed a vote of thanks to Tricia for coming to the meeting and giving an excellent talk on aspects of the palace with which we may not be familiar.
The meeting closed with the drawing of the monthly raffle and confirmation of the arrangements for the August meeting.
Due to the closure of the hall this was the last meeting the club would hold at the venue, which has been its regular meeting place since its formation in 1974. The club wish to thank the management and staff of the hall for the excellent service they have provided over the past 38 years.
