Six month pilot for CCTV spy car agreed

A CCTV car will soon be patrolling the borough after Thurrock Council's cabinet agreed a six month pilot last night.

The spy car will issue fines for a range of parking issues around the borough, but will concentrate on parking outside schools and illegally parked lorries.

Cllr Angie Gaywood, portfolio holder for public protection, said the pilot will be self-funding so is a "win-win situation" and will increase safety outside schools.

The car will be visiting every school on a regular basis, and anyone found to have parked illegally will be fined a minimum of £35 for each offence, or £75 if they delay payment.

Didn't the council write of the money owed through non payment of council tax recently. This is how they've decided to get the money back.

What a joke, attacking parents!

What about looking for the idiots that park blocking roads overnight, or park fully on pavements stopping oaps using scooters.

I'm so glad that crime in Thurrock is at such a low level that the Council has time to pay for a spy car to rake in cash from fining parents taking kids to school.

Perhaps they should spend some time takling some of the real problems of crime and anti social behaviour in the borough - or is there no cash to be made from tackling the real issues?

what a waste of money once again !

what a waste of money you would think the council would have more important things to spend this money on.

just another money making machine

The parents that park on the restricted zig-zags deserve to be fined. The markings are there for the safety of all the kids including theirs. If they park legally then they will not be targetted.

Whilst I don't disagree Fletch, this is surely only for a very little time on weekdays only, whilst other issues we have to live with 24/7.

Duh, that 'very little time' you are talking about is when all the kids are on the pavements either going to or from school and as kids tend to dart out with little warning you need the zig-zags clear so you have the ability to see them!

Mattster,

From your attitude, you appear to think this is an altruistic attempt to save children lives. Think again.

Ask yourself why they are focusing on these two offenses...Duh

I agree with Fletch and Mattster they have hit the nail on the head, any irresponsible drivers that do not obey the Highway Code rules and in doing so put other road user at risk by stopping on zig zags or causing a hazard by parking on corners will only have themselves to blame if they get caught on camera and fined, stopping on zig zags for even 1 second is against the law!!

Bending the road safety or Highway code rules is not a way to improve road safety around school’s, hopefully the money gained from fines will pay to have fixed cameras around all Thurrock schools, allowing the camera car to sort out other irresponsible drivers that unofficially park in disabled parking bays.

Illegally parked lorries is also fine with me, real PITA near us.

Circle round St.Mary's Primary in Tilbury every morning and afternoon, the council tax deficit will soon be cleared!

If people park properly and in correct places, they don't get fined. Simples!

It is also about time some parents walked there kids to school instead of driving half a mile, and blocking the local roads. :o)

I moved out of a road that had a school at the bottom of it because the parents that drove their kids to school there behaved no better than the chav scum you see walking around Grays town centre with a can of lager in their hands. Abusive and with an attitude that they owned the world. Anything for their little darlings.

Thurrock Council like all councils in their infinite wisdom to make money, target the easiest option ,,, the motorist. They can't do the difficult things like getting Council Tax so they look for easy options.
The school run is superbly simple target, parents often rushing to and from work, have few options of where to park and BINGO cash cow (kerching!) for the council while they prattle on about illegal parking outside schools, knowing that parents don't have the options of anywhere legal to park, especially around infant schools.
Similarly lorries as there are probably places where they park regularly, so again easy target.
If any of you commenting get caught like friends of mine have in Basildon and Southend, just dropping someone off, I hope you take it graciously.
If the council took action and responsibility for getting money in that it is owed, they wouldn't need things like this. I also wonder if this has been pushed through after the report I read that said councils will have to publish the number of parking spaces they have and the amount of money they rake in. Which I believe is part of the High St vs out of town shopping debate
