YOUNGSTERS from Thurrock were among 134 from across the region who were honoured for doing their best.

Corringham-born paralympic hero Danny Crates handed out medallions, certificates and cheques for £200 to young people, aged between 11 and 25, at the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards.

Danny said: “It’s been fantastic to follow an inspirational summer of sport with the Jack Petchey Foundation’s wonderful celebration of our young peoples’ achievements.”

Among the winners from Thurrock was 17-year-old Kayleigh Merchant, pictured bottom left, who is involved with the Thurrock Young Carers project in Grays.

Kayleigh was a carer for her mum until she passed away and now looks after her dad.

A spokesman for JPF said: “Kayleigh is a great asset as she has hands on knowledge of being a carer and relates well to other young people. Winning the award was a great way to show Kayleigh how much all her hard work is appreciated.”
