Four arrested, PC injured, in park brawl

AN OFFICER was injured and four youths arrested as police broke up a large brawl in Corringham.

It is thought the fight, which broke out at 3pm on Sunday in Corringham Town Park, was between two rival gangs.

The police helicopter was scrambled and officers on the ground broke up the fight before making four arrests, all on suspicion of affray.

One 17-year-old, from Stanford-le-Hope, remained in police custody and another received a penalty notice for disorder. A 19-year-old, also from Stanford-le-Hope, was cautioned, and a third 17-year-old from Stanford was released on police bail until October 30.

There are no reports of any serious injuries, but one police officer suffered a minor injury.

Police then enforced stop and search powers, enabling officers to stop people in the area and search them for weapons. This remained in place for 24 hours.

The melee comes just weeks after youngsters ran riot in Corringham Library during the summer holiday. The Adizone park in the town has also suffered from vandalism.

Angie Gaywood, Thurrock Council’s portfolio holder for public protection, said: “We support the police action and will keep working with them.”
