Centre falls in the shopping league

LAKESIDE has dropped five places in this year’s ranking of the UK’s top retail destinations.

The CACI retail footprint uses average customer expenditure to place shopping hotspots in order of success.

In 2011’s figures Lakeside, in West Thurrock, came 33rd in the retail league table, but this year’s statistics reveal the centre has dropped to 39.

It has now been overtaken by cities such as Cambridge and Bath.

Last year Lakeside’s retail footprint showed an average annual expenditure of £670 per shopper compared to just £550 in 2012.

In its first year, the huge Westfield shopping centre at Stratford, popular with visitors from Essex due to its direct train links, has been ranked the 11th best destination in Britain.

Shoppers spent an average of £1,060 each in the past year.

Europe’s largest shopping centre was beaten in expenditure by the likes of Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool and purpose-built destinations, such as Bluewater in Kent.

London’s exclusive West End came out top on the CACI retail footprint for the second year running, with a total annual spend from customers of £4,770.
