State Cinema deadline passes

BIDS for the sale of the State Cinema in Grays have closed.

Thurrock Council, which is interested in purchasing the Grade II listed building in George Street through a private-public partnership, is now waiting for feedback

Cllr John Kent, leader of Thurrock Council said “We are aware that bids for the State Cinema closed on September 19 and have not yet received any feedback on the sale process.

“Of course the building is privately owned and is being privately sold and we are still pursuing all avenues, including purchasing the building.”

I do hope not.
I find it ironic that a Labour council is looking to enter into some form of partnership to run it.
The fact we are where is are is largely down to Labour council's myopia over the last 25-30 years.
The State should be seen as the foundation of any regeneration of Grays, as Grays lacks any sort of focal point. It's been allowed to degenerate into a mish mash of nothing. We aren't going to get major chainstores here as there is no draw.

Instead of splashing cash on a brick shell why not clear up the rubbish, cut the grass, build some news schools, remove the graffiti and remove drunks and spitting foeigners from the high street.

this sager has gone on far too long about time someone had the guts to make decision on this they have had the best part of 20years!! maybe knocking it down and starting again is the best option.

OK knock it down and build what that would be useful and act as a focal point for making Grays attractive to investors? And none of the "african church" nonsense, which seems to be some people's mantra.
I know ... a 2000 seat auditorium (akin to Hammersmith Odeon as was) that could attract music and variety acts to the borough and in doing so people, OK mostly in the evening, but there is an industry and therefore jobs in that. But you attract different and multi-generation audiences, so you need to cater for a wide age range.
It never fails to amaze me that this hasn't been done, Grays is a couple of miles from the M25, pretty good road links (far better than Cliffs in Southend) and has a railway station a stone's throw from the potential auditorium.
Those who call for it's destruction are probably as bereft of any ideas as to what to replace it with as the next. I'd guarantee someone would knock it down on some pretence of having a buyer or whatever and then nothing and it would become a derelict piece of land. Our planning people are known for granting permission for things without a fully signed and agreed plan. The "Sandpit" car park area in Stanford is a recent example of the planning committee's incompetence.
