Vision for new studio school

How the building will look How the building will look

THIS is what the new Ockendon Studio School will look like when it is completed next year.

Plans for the timber frame construction, clad with larch, were approved at last week’s Thurrock Council planning committee and now just need the nod from the Government.

The single storey L-shaped extension, built on the grounds of Ockendon Academy, consists of 10 enterprise rooms and an open learning space to house the 300-strong pupils who will be using the new-style school.

Cllr Charlie Curtis, a school govenor, allayed fears over lack of field space at the site, saying: “The school will have a couple of playing fields on landfill land once it has sealed up.

"It’s something the school is looking at.”

What have the Gateway, Ockendon and the Gateway all got in common? They receive huge investment for buildings, yet are in the bottom four in terms of Thurrock league table positions.

It seems to me the worse exam results a school has the more money it gets for new buildings.

The more successful schools must query this odd rationale.

It's the idea of 'if it isn't working, chuck money at it.'

In this day and age, when the country is close to bankrupt, these projects should be shelved.
