Council sets up car sharing scheme

TRAVEL Thurrock estimates residents could save up to £1,000 a year if they shared a car to work.

With that in mind, Thurrock Council has set up a new car-share scheme.

The scheme is totally free to use and allows residents to find other people going their way to work, so the journey can be shared.

People can either take turns driving, offer someone a lift, in exchange for a contribution to the fuel costs, or look for someone to give them a lift.

Once registered, the account can be accessed from work or home.

It also enables people to search for car share opportunity from a national database.

From experience this only works for shift workers, where they have a specific start/finish time.
I've done this with people on day work and it can be extremely inconvenient if you want to go and they can't leave and vice versa or they or you want to do things on the way to or from work. I would sooner have the expense and convenience so I can do my own thing.
As for any Tom, Dick or Harry, you might as well just pick anyone up from the street.
It's ironic we instill into young children that you don't get into cars with strangers, but as adults we are being told to do exactly the opposite.
