Masonic hall set to become flats?
3:00pm Thursday 27th September 2012 in News
PLANS to demolish a masonic hall in Grays to make way for flats have been submitted to Thurrock Council.
Apex Property Holdings wants to build 30 two bedroom flats at the Thurrock Masonic Hall site, in Lenthall Avenue, Grays.
The design and access statement for the application said: “It is understood that the hall has been operating effectively at a loss for a number of years and they have to sell the site.
“They do not have other community functions other than Masonic and Rotary functions, which have now been moved to the Cross Keys. There is no particular discernable character local to this site, with a mixture of styles.
“It is anticipated the proposed apartments will form a new and more pleasant street scene on this prominent corner site.”
A similar planning application was submitted to the council in June, but was withdrawn so various design ideas could be revised.
The application said around 35 per cent of the flats would be affordable housing. The company Home Group has offered to buy each apartment for £74,000.

If they are only worth £74K on the open market I'm sure there are plenty who could buy them without going through a landlord. But I bet they'd cost more than the £74K offered through the back door and brown envelope process.

In not much over 100 years we have gone from overcrowded slums, keeping the wealthy landlords rich at the expense of the tennants living standards to nice well built spacious property in the 30's and 40's and are now very much heading back twords building the slums of the future - again for the profit of the privileged few at the expense of the poor who will have to endure living in them.
