Council homes releting times improving

THE time it takes for Thurrock Council’s housing department to relet its homes is improving, according to latest figures.

In April and May, it was taking more than three months for the council to turn around houses, ready for the next set of tenants.

Figures for June and months since show it is now taking around 37 days.

Portfolio holder for housing, Cllr Val Morris-Cook, called the figures an improvement, but said they are still “not good enough”.

She said: “When I took over this portfolio, I was shocked by the time taken. “It’s getting better, but it’s still not good enough.

“In June it was running at a 37-day average, compared to over 100 days in the two previous months. It is well below the target, but anyone knows it shouldn’t take that long.”

Considering the flat below me has been empty since February 2012 I can’t see how this is true. Two houses in Tilbury are boarded up as well, not much being done there and that’s just 3 properties I have noticed. Housing allocations in Thurrock are a disgrace, I spend years and years queuing for a better property and the Silver and Gold queue jumpers always come in and take the best ones and leave Bronze with the high-rise flats and maisonettes. Thurrock Council seems to be run by a bunch of clowns.

What a load of rubbish! Hilton, you are spot on. I was living in Tilbury up until May this year.We needed rehousing desperately and I found 5 empty houses, that sat empty for over 5 months (in fact, isn't the one on Feenan Highway still empty? That would make it nearly 18 months!) I contacted them saying I would be willing to undertake any work needed. They didn't want to know. So glad we escaped Thurrock's clutches!

They've probably re-classified properties properties that have been empty for a certain amount of time, say 3 months, as long term voids and excluded them from the figures. All councils that are crap at their job do it. They'll come up with the excuse that the property requires extensive works to which begs the question why have they let it get into such a state. In short they aren't getting better, they are fiddling the figures.
