Grays Athletic vs Soham Town Rangers
This live event has finished
- Full time: Grays Athletic 1 - 1 Soham Town Rangers
- LIVE from Rush Green
- Ryman Division One North
- Soham took the lead after three minutes through Paxman with Blues levelling from the spot five minutes later.
So a flurry of late pressure by Grays and three excellent chances, two brilliantly saved, could have won Grays this game.
I think Soham would have felt aggrieved to lose. It was a very even game on the whole.
Sounds like a crazy game just north of here in Chesthunt where EIGHT man Aveley were beaten 4-2.
More on that later and a full report of this game to follow this evening.
Thank you, once again, for following tonight.

Some late pressure from Grays!
And what a save that is from Bircham! That's better than Kamurasi's. He claws away Baker's header from point blank range. The crowd were already cheering, but that was a top, top save.
Ryan Auger is booked for kicking the ball away after a free kick is given against him.
Grays should lead. Chance of the half falls to Richards.
The move started with good defending by Joao and Hall, with the pair winning the ball from Auger in the right hand corner.
Joao then played a long cross field pass towards Richards, which the defender failed to deal with, allowing Richards in round the back. He was through on goal, but his shot from 10 yards was tame.
Moments later, Richards misses again, this time failing to turn home Mashall's cross from 5 yards. Will Blues rue thos missed chances?
The corner beat everyone, as did Robbie Mason's cross. Baker then cleared the ball from the next cross with a powerful header.
The way this game is at the moment (close, but scrappy) either side will feel aggrieved to lose.
Baker having a great half. He's got in the way of everything, headed everything, tackled anyone in green.
He's just come close from a corner, too. Ball flashed in, he just missed it and Richards headed the ball back across goal when what he wanted to do there was head it in.
Corner for Soham - it's that kind of frantic, end-to-end game.
Lee Flynn definitely not showing his age as he flies into tackles and marauds up and down the left flank.
Sub for Grays:
Danny Bunce off, Luke Marshall on.
Bunce has played well. Looking a little tired in the last few moments though, so could be a good move by Heyrettin.
It's strange game here. Neither side are dominating. Both have been wasteful going forward but both are defending fairly well.
Nice break from Joao Carlos as Grays clear a corner. Good one two on the left hand side in Rangers' half with Bunce. His cross is good but Richards is beaten to it.
This time, they progress a tad further and Bunce hits a shot low, but it's straight at Bircham.
Grays clearing their lines, but again struggling to hold the ball as they go forward.
Grays struggling to get hold of the ball at the moment. Soham mopping everything up going forward and retaining possession in Blues' half.
The visitors are lacking a final ball at the moment though.
Not sure whether its Mason awareness and movement, or Baker's lack of both, but Mason keeps finding space between defenders.
On this occasion he collects a long pass before turning. But his shot from 20-yards is blocked.
Free kick to Grays now. Dangerous position and Grays have a few who can take this. Flynn the obvious candidate and he places the ball. It's about 25/30 yards from goal.
Richards strikes it, but it's over.
Outstanding save by Kamurasi. It looked a certain goal as Robbie Mason met with a cross six yards from goal.
He headed back across goal but Kamurasi lept, got a fingertip to it and kept it out.
Grays are peppering the box with crosses now, but Soham holding firm.
The latest cross, by Bunce, is picked out of the air by Carlos. It's then struck by Sweeney and deflected wide.
Grays getting closer as the crowd acknowledge a marked improvement in performance since the first 5 minutes of the half.
Red Card: Marc Sontag (Aveley) - Violent Conduct 50'— @AveleyFC 25 September 2012
Couple of Grays subs amongst the excitement, too:
Jamie Richards replaces Kenny Beaney
Joe Sweeney replaces James Bunn
Grays on top again now. A great break and cross is just headed away as Carlos had prepared to head home. Resulting corner comes to nothing.
Action packed couple of moments:
Lalite works his way into the box. As he moves the ball across to Bunn, whose effort (which he should have scored) is deflected over, Lalite goes down under a seemingly late challenge.
Grays are adament that they should have a penalty and surround the referee, but a corner is given.
Bunce then takes the corner which is tapped in by the unmarked Beaney on the goal line.
GOAL! GRAYS ATHLETIC 2 - 2 Soham Town Rangers - Kenny Beaney
Bunce's free kick is punched clear by Bircham.
Lalites cross is then headed goalwards and pushed away unconvincingly by Bircham.
Free kick now though, and a booking for Harradine as he hacks down Carlos. Poor challenge.
Dont want to look at the pitch no more, maybe the view at the burger bar is better :-) #grayslive— @Parker1890 25 September 2012
Minutes later, Bunce goes close for Grays, forcing a great save from Bircham with a 25 yard strike. That's Bircham's first real save.
Disappointing start to the half from Blues.
Terrible start to the half for Blues. It's a swooping ball into the box from the left by Auger. Atangana rose to glance it home and the ball sailed into the far right of the goal, with Kamurasi flat footed.
I'm not convinced Atangana got a touch on Auger's cross, but the goal has been awarded to the big striker.
GOAL! Grays Athletic 1 - 2 SOHAM TOWN RANGERS - Frank Atangana
Early corner for Rangers. Pope recovered well to clear after slipping under the attentions of Atangana.
Second half underway
135 here at Rush Green tonight.
Second half is about to begin.
Half Time: Cheshunt 2 vs 2 Aveley— @AveleyFC 25 September 2012
Well, it was a half that promised much but delivered little.
Soham took an early lead after a great individual goal by Paxman in the 3rd minute.
But the visitors were pegged back by a Bunce penalty 5 minutes later. No arguing with the penalty, by the way. Beaney was scythed down inside the box.
But Blues lacked confidence a little and struggled to keep the ball as effectively as they have in recent league matches.
The game was a tad scrappy and there were no clear cut chances. A very subdued 35 minutes, following an explosive opening 10.
Bunce blazes over a shot from 25 yards ending what looked to be a promising move.
More excellent play from Lalite in the build up, linking defence to attack excellently.
Late free kick for Soham here and a chance for them to get the ball into the box after Baker fouled Auger.
And it's then Baker who clears Auger's ball in.

Move of the game from Grays.
All started by the class of Lalite in midfield. Control, make space, shield, pass - his typical, effortless but class routine. Danny Bunce is then set off down the left, runs at Davis. His cross-come-shot is almost turned in by Bunn who dives at it as it crosses the edge of the six yard box.
Great ball in from the right by Lalite - from midway inside Rangers' half - is met by Hall, who heads wide.
Get the feeling Kamurasi is being targeted as a bit of a weakness in the Grays goal. He's looked a little unsure at times, coming for balls that aren't there.
Ryan Auger has just caught him off his line and tried from 40-odd yards. The ball bounced wide, but from our view up here, Kamurasi didn't look convinced that that was going wide.
Goal! Cheshunt 2 vs 2 Aveley: Ryan Wade 25'— @AveleyFC 25 September 2012
Joao Carlos really looks in the mood tonight. He's plucking the ball out of the air, and terrorizing the STR left back, Harradine.
Could be a crucial piece in any Blues success here tonight.
Good save by Kamurasi.
Grays, again sloppy in possession. With the defence at sixes and sevens, Mason drifts off his marker and is fed the ball from midfield.
As Baker recovers, Mason opens up his body and looks to bend the ball beyond Kamurasi into the top right hand corner from 20 yards, but Kamurasi reads it and leaps to his right, pushing the ball wide.
The corner comes to ntohing.
It's been a very scrappy first 25 minutes. Another Grays corner is cleared.
Grays looking very nervous at the back, particularly in possession. That's two dodgy looking passes that Pope has played back to Kamurasi as Mason closes down the back four.
It's even stevens at the moment though. Grays just on top.
GOAL! Cheshunt 1 vs 1 Aveley: Shane Oakley 14'— @AveleyFC 25 September 2012
GOAL! Cheshunt 1 vs 2 Aveley: Paul Burnett 16'— @AveleyFC 25 September 2012
Big call for another penalty for Blues. Super work on the right wing by Joao, turning away from Harradine, sidestepping Bromwish. He then swapped passes with Bunn before he was taken down in the box.
In fact, the linesman's flag went up. Had it not, the ref might have been pointing to the spot.
Few balls into the box by Grays in the last few moments. Rangers just about holding their own.
They're a little unsure as they defend Joao Carlos latest corner, but they survive.
I was just about to say that Aveley are also in action tonight, bidding to bounce back from their defeat to Margate at the weekend.
They're 1-0 down there.
Goal! Cheshunt 1 vs 0 Aveley: David Wicks 7'— @AveleyFC 25 September 2012
What a start. The game's wide open. Grays could do with being a little better in possession. The space is there to exploit if they are.
Right, time to catch breath!
Smashed into the top right hand corner by Bunce. Great penalty.
All Grays now.
GOAL! GRAYS ATHLETIC 1 - 1 Soham Town Rangers - Danny Bunce
PENALTY! Beaney is scythed down in the box...
Oh dear. Awful start for Grays.
The balls played into Jack Paxmans feet through the channel. He ran diagonally at goal, jinked inside of Pope and smashed it home from 6 yards.
That's the 6th goal Grays have conceded in their last 35 minutes of football.
GOAL! Grays Athletic 0 - 1 SOHAM TOWN RANGERS - Jack Paxman
Soham played Tilbury at the weekend. Tilbury scored with the last kick of the game to deny Soham their first home win of the season.
Just had a glance at Hakan's programme notes. He says he blames himself for the defeat on Saturday.
Apologies for the delay, had one ot two technical problems.
We're about ready to go now though!
We're just waiting on final team news here.
It looks like Luke Marshall and Joe Sweeney have been dropped for Blues tonight, with Beaney replacing him.
Here's Grays Ath then:
Kamurasi; Pope, Baker, Kirby, Flynn (c); Lalite, Beaney, Bunce; Hall, Bunn, Carlos
Subs: Scarlett, Marshall, Sweeney, East, Richards
Soham Town Rangers:
Bircham; Davis, Bromwish, Asseni, Harradine; Auger, Simpson (c), Andrews, Paxman; Atangana, Mason
Subs: Motley, McCabe, Sessions
Welcome to our live coverage of tonight's Ryman Div One North clash between Grays Athletic and Soham Town Rangers.
Well what a seven days its been for Grays. I witnessed a scinitillating performance by Blues here last week as they breezed past Heybridge Swifts. Even the boss, Hakan Heyrettin, couldn't quite believe how efficient off the ball and dynamic on it his side were.
But just four days later they were pummelled here by Maidstone United who play in the Ryman Div One South league.
But every cloud and all that - one less cup competition means more focus can be dedicated to the league, which, I think is generally perceived to be the priority.
