Joy for children in Grays as royal letter arrives

A GROUP of children from Thurrock were thrilled to get a letter from Buckingham Palace congratulating them on their artistic achievement.

The Oaktree Junior Youth Club, in Grays, were so inspired by all the street parties and events commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, that they decided to decorate a large board with all things royal, including kings, queens, corgi’s and the Union Jack.

With the help of workers from the centre, in Hogg Lane, they sent a photograph of their hard work with individual letters to Her Majesty.

They weren’t expecting to hear back, so it came as a welcome surprise when a thank you letter from the Queen's lady-in-waiting arrived.

Cllr Oliver Gerrish, portfolio holder for education and children's social Care at Thurrock Council attended a small ceremony with the children and everyone involved to cut the ribbon and unveil the framed letter which is now displayed in the main corridor of the centre.

He said: "I am very pleased to be here on this very special occasion and meet all the children in unveiling this wonderful acknowledgement of their creativity.

“I am delighted that this letter has been given pride of place in the centre for everyone to enjoy what they have achieved."

As a reward for their work, each child received a framed copy of Her Majesty's letter and a photograph of the Jubilee art board.
