Benefits fraudster gets community service

A MAN who sub-let his council property has been ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work.

Steven Singh, 29, of Clayburn Gardens, South Ockendon, admitted three counts of benefit fraud at Basildon Magistrates Court on Thursday, June 18.

Magistrates heard he had been allocated the council property but was sub-letting it to someone else, and was actually living in North London.

He failed to declare his income from his tenant.

As well as the unpaid work, Singh was sentenced to a community order of 12 months, and must pay costs of £150.

He will also have to repay all the overpaid benefit to Thurrock Council.
