Chairman's despair as vandals hit hall

Some of the damage to the door Some of the damage to the door

THE chairman of East Tilbury Village Hall is to step down after growing fed-up of vandals damaging the building.

Thousands of pounds and hours of volunteer time have gone into making the hall a community facility, but in the past few months vandals have scratched names on to doors and smashed the back wall.

Yobs have even defaced a sign urging residents to respect the hall.

David Crates, the chairman, is to walk away from the role at the hall’s AGM – and suspects other committee members will leave, too, jeopardsing the facility’s future.

The current committee has overseen the running and maintenance of the hall for the last five years, even raising funds to rejuvenate the decor.

Mr Crates said: “A local firm, Fab Signs & Structures, very kindly provided, free of charge, the ‘respect it and protect it’ signs.

“For over a year these were successful and then the front sign started to have the lettering pulled off and a few names started to be scratched on to the doors facing the park.

“In recent weeks, this has spread to all the doors, even those facing the road. The final straw for me was when we found the render on the back wall had been pulled off, exposing almost half the brickwork.”

The hall is used every day and night by local groups, including senior citizens, marshall arts clubs and fitness instructors. It is also available for parties.

Mr Crates added: “The committee is made up of just five people and as I now intend to resign at the next AGM on July 9, there will only be four.

“It is soul destroying after giving up so much free time to improve the hall, that in the space of a few weeks, all of our hard work can be undone.

“Some people just don’t understand the word community.”

d_2da_ougle turning it into something resembling a prison is not what is required.
Now CCTV would be the way to go and infra-red even better as you don't need any lighting.

Masked vigilantes with baseball bats would be cheaper. The only thing these kids fear is violence, give it to 'em I say!

The Village Hall has been plagued by youths for years but something has definately changed in the last couple or three months.
Anyone notice the mopeds and bikes parked up around the entrance and to the rear of it?
I've seen the police there and yet nothing is done to move them on because to move them on they would doubtless infest our area again and to be rid of these inbeciles is a bonus.
The Village Hall is a disgrace and it never ceases to amaze me that when going through the School it is NEVER free from youths loitering with intent.
We used to have PCSO's who attended the School when the children came out...doesn't happen any more from what I've seen!
As for the damage, take a look at the scum who sit with their feet up on the handlebars of their "Bikes" and the fans who hover around them like flies round ****,there's a clue for you all.
Next time "Mums and Dads", when you're over the school picking up your kiddies, remove the mobile phones and IPods from your ear holes and open your eyes because technology has made you blind to things going on right where you walk!
If anyone sees anything call the cops or are you waiting for someone else to do the dirty work for you?
How about a NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH TEAM..or is that too obvious?

CCTV?fencing? yeah all well and good buts its a community hall not a concentration camp. These type of measures only incite vandalism or moves it to a different place. Some patrolling police cars or bobbies on foot rather than the powerless community officers wouldn't go a miss or better still bring in the sniffer dogs, Nick the yobs for underage drinking and possession of drugs(which it stinks of there even at school picking up times )And hit the parents where it hurts in their pockets with fines and keep them coming.Solution? NO not really but its a start. And to an earlier comment,I often wonder if that CCTV camera there actually works?? If it did then police must already be aware of the problem one would think?
