Val's bid for top cop role
7:30am Thursday 21st June 2012 in News
Val Morris-Cook
A LABOUR councillor has thrown her hat into the ring for the police commissioner elections.
Val Morris-Cook, deputy leader of Thurrock Council, has been announced as the party’s candidate for the police and crime commissioner role, which will come up for election for the first time this November.
She will go up against former Southend divisional commander Mick Thwaites and the Conservative candidate, former Royal Naval officer Nicholas Alston.
Mrs Morris-Cook narrowly secured a victory following a month-long ballot of Labour party members.
Jordan Newell, head of the Colchester Labour party, had stood against Mrs Morris-Cook and secured the backing of former home secretary Jacqui Smith.
Val said: “It’s an honour to have been nominated.
“My role is to be the voice of the community that asks how are we going to fight the fear of crime? My role will be to be a liaison between the local people and the chief constable.
“I won’t be leaving the people of Grays Riverside, but the role is full-time so should I be elected I will have to review my council duties. There’s a lot of bridges to cross before then though.”
