A SOUTH Ockendon girl is set to tour the USA after securing a place in a top marching band.
Lara Corcoran crossed the Atlantic last Friday to join up with the Carolina Crown Corp after she was selected to join the outfit for a 51-day tour.
She will also represent the Corp in the World Championships on August 11.
The 19-year-old, who went to Dilkes School and Palmer’s College, has been involved in a sport called Winter guard for the last 16 years, winning awards in the UK, Europe and competing in the sport’s World Championships in Ohio in 2008.
Lara has also enjoyed great success with marching bands, winning awards in the UK and Europe, and her dream has always been to march with an American band. In pursuit of this dream, Lara took a gap year, sent off a DVD to a Corp in Carolina and auditioned for the group, successfully, in April.
Marching bands are formed of instrumental musicians who generally perform outdoors, incorporating marching and other movement into their musical performance.
Lara has been selected for the colour gaurd, the branch of the band where good movement and flag bearing skills are essential.
Lara travelled back to North Carolina on Friday, May 18.
She will rehearse for three weeks before hitting the road for 32 competitive events, starting in Ohio on June 16 and stopping off in, among other places, DisneyWorld, in Florida.
