Bloom fears over lack of volunteers
3:40pm Wednesday 18th April 2012 in News
THE award-winning Bulphan in Bloom committee is in danger of folding.
The group, which won a silver award at the Royal Horticulture Society’s Britain in Bloom finals in 2010, and gold two years running at Anglia in Bloom, has suffered due to members moving away or being unable to devote as much time as they did before.
The committee only has enough money left to pay for its summer plants and needs to raise more funds urgently.
Chairman Kelly Fiford said: “We don’t want to have to lose the group, but we urgently need more volunteers from the village.
“With less committee members and volunteers we have found it hard to do as much fundraising as we did before, and that won’t improve unless we can get more people to give a little time.
“We’ve also lost our printing sponsor due to the current economical climate, which hasn’t helped.”
The group is now unable to hold its popular open gardens day this year, or start anymore new projects to beautify the village.
Kelly said despite the committee putting leaflets through 350 homes in the village, they are still not getting new people coming out to help for one-off community clear up days, and stressed that anything villagers can do will help.
She added: “People don’t need to join the committee, even if they can litter pick, organise a one-off fundraising event, look into applying for grants, or do leaflets drops, it all helps.
“Obviously, it would be great if we can get some new committee members, but these volunteers do need to be able to give more time.”
The committee is holding one of its regular clear up days in the village on Sunday, April 29, from 9.30am to 1pm.
Volunteers do not have to stay for the whole time and are welcome to turn up and leave at their leisure.
There will be litter picking, painting, mowing, and weeding, as well as safe spaces where children can join in.
