Rugby club breaks scrum world record

The world record scrum at Thurrock Rugby Club
THURROCK Rugby Football Club has broken the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest rugby scrum.
The record stood at 202 people, but the club, off Long Lane in Grays, managed to find 584 people to take part in its attempt.
In the process of breaking the record, they managed to raise more than £800 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a charity the club has been supporting for a number of years.
Mercedes Foy, captain of the club’s T-Birds team, said: “It was a phenomenal day, really fantastic.
“We were really pleased to break the record and raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cance.
“This brings our fundraising total for the last two seasons up to £4,500.”
Guests at the event included Thurrock mayor Charlie Curtis and Margaret Alphonsi, vice-captain of England women’s rugby team.
Also present was Rugby Football Union president Willie Wildash, who presented the club with a special National RFU President’s award for its hard work raising money.
More than 1,000 visitors were also in attendence, and cheered the club’s first team on as they beat Eton Manor.
