Cyclist injured following collision with a car in Grays

A CYCLIST collided with a car in Grays this morning.

Paramedics, police and the fire brigade arrived on the scene at approximately 9.45am after reports that a cyclist was trapped following a collision with a red Ford Ka.

Police closed Orsett Road in Grays between the A126 and Dell Road, whilst ambulance crews stablised the cyclist, a man believed to be in his 60s. He was taken to Basildon Hospital with slight injuries.

Nobody else was hurt in the collision but there were delays to buses caught up in the traffic.

The road was partially reopened at approximately 10.15 as more police arrived to control the flow of traffic.

The accident was cleared by 10.45am.

One more reason for more cycle lanes and paths, drivers have got to be more careful when confronting cyclists, give them more room and be more aware.

Do you live in Grays, if you do then you will know that there is no room for cycle lanes on Orsett Road. Orsett Road is a nightmare for pedestrians trying to dodge the cyclists on the pavements - they should be on the roads. Cyclists and Drivers should be given training on how to cycle and how to look out for and give room to cyclists.

luckygirl, i know orsett road well and this is the whole reason why women dont make for good construction workers or town planner, their is plenty of room in which a cycle path could be put in, the road is wide enough and this could include splitting the pavement to accomodate half of a cycle lane with the road supplying the rest go back to bed will ya woman

Grays town centre is a hazard for drivers and pedestrians let alone cyclists. The whole road system needs to be remodelled. Until the road system is improved the town centre will continue to die.

Well what a sexist comment. So tell me when exactly on the pavement is there room for the pavement to be split. This morning whilst walking down Orsett Road to go to the station I have to dodge wheelie bins (which tonight will be all over the roads as the dustment can't be arsed to put them back) dodge the cyclists on the pavements and walk past the other pedestrians and this all at 6.15am. During the day you are not only dodging everything I have mentioned but also more cyclists, more pedestrians, parents with prams who refuse to move out of the way as well as mobility scooters. Wrong now am I.

Firstly luckygirl, yes I do live in Grays. Secondly there is room for a cycle lane in Orsett Road ..... 'ON THE ROAD', and that is what d_2da_ougle said. You know, everyone has the right to be stupid, unfortunately you abuse the privilege!

Just a tad bitchy Thurrockbob! There IS NOT enough room on Orsett Road for a cycle lane, I learnt to drive in Grays and that road is a hazard in itself without having cyclists squeezing passed. What the Gazette have failed to mention is that the cyclist in this incident was DRUNK! Now if the driver had been drunk at 9.45am it would be instant points, a penalty fine and maybe even court. But because this half-wit choose to ride a bike when under the influence the driver's insurance is likely to go up and of course, drivers can't claim on feckless scum. It's one rule for cyclists and another for everyone else. Also, a note to the Gazette, get your facts right before you publish a story and make out the cyclist to be a poor defenceless victim when in fact it was his complete stupidity!

Thurrock Bob I have reported you for your personally abusive comment aimed at me. In future try reading what has actually been written. Don't bother to respond as all I will do is report your comment.

Did the cyclist collide with the car or did the car hit the cyclist?

Some of Orsett road can be turned into a cycle path, some of the pavement could. Some of the road is wide enough, some the path is wide enough. There is always a way. How do you know the cyclist was drunk? Were you the first Police officer on the scene?
Or were you just there and summised he was!

it would be easier to put a cycle path through morrisons car park, past the state cinema,up clarence road and through grays park, thus separating the motorists and cyclists through the overused town centre and orsett rd.

Actually Thurrockbob, I personally know the driver and am aware that the cyclist has form for being a drunk nuisance as a witness knew him and reiterated this to the driver. I don't particularly care for your tone either, who are you to say what conclusions I would draw with regards to the state of the cyclist?! I was purely making a point that all the facts of a story should be known. Drivers are always blamed for road accidents, maybe cyclists should take some responsibility for their actions too. So Thurrockbob, don't be hasty to jump to conclusions without the full picture...

Just because the driver had 'form' for being drunk, doesn't mean he did that day. I suggest you get the full picture too because YOU weren't there, just heard heresay.

You say you don't like my tone?

Well ... I certainly am not going to lose sleep over that one, lol!

The CYCLIST not the DRIVER... if you're going to quote me on something, at least get the **** thing right! And fair enough, neither of us know the complete story of what went on, I'm just not quite sure why you don't take any other person's view into consideration. And I couldn't care less that you're not going to lose sleep over what I say, I won't waste my time arguing with a small minded person like yourself.

I would suggest that while there might appear, to some, that there is adequate room for a cycle lane in Orsett Road, such an opinion might not be shared by the relevant departments in the council. I have to agree very much with luckygirl / Soton girl on this.

rocket 1 also has a valid point put a cycle path through grays park clarance road and down by the state problem solved without having to play about with sections of kerb and road plus the generall direction of this path route would be more pleasing to the eye there you go when you think miracles can happen it isnt hard thats 2 solutions to the little mumbo jumbo problem that isnt really a problem

I am astonished! Seems to me that these guys are being sexist as they have nothing better to do or have some sort of hatred for women! We are both equals in my eyes and have the right to our own opinions. The girls did not deserve them comments from on-line bullies who hide behind computers!!
