Council in talks to solve yard dispute

THURROCK Council is working with a controversial demolition yard to resolve issues raised by fed up residents.

The Gazette recently reported how the council could face a big legal bill after an enforcement notice served on Squibb Demolition, in Stanford-le-Hope, was quashed by the Planning Inspectorate.

The enforcement was thrown out on appeal because of a technicality to do with its conditions, to the dismay of residents who have complained about noise and lorries at the site.

The council and Squibb are now in talks.

In a joint statement, a council spokesman said: “After the closure of the hearing by the Planning Inspector, discussions were revived between the council and Squibb Group to seek to resolve the council’s concerns.

“Constructive progress was made and there is a clear agreement to work with each other to achieve this aim.

“The intention is to not delay matters any further than is necessary, to focus on negotiations to minimise costs to both parties and to address the concerns of local residents and Squibb Group where appropriate in seeking the best planning outcome.

“A planning application is expected to be submitted shortly with additional information that, it is hoped, will resolve the matter.”

The council hopes another appeal will not be needed.

Mr Lever added: “Only if there are any fundamental issues that cannot be resolved will there be a need to consider a further appeal.

“Arrangements are being made for a further meeting. Officers of the council will update members on the progress of discussions at the next planning meeting.”
