Lit firework thrown through letterbox being treated as arson

POLICE are treating a lighted firework thrown through a letterbox as arson.

Fire crews were called to the semi-detached home in Halt Lane, Linford at 7.49pm on Thursday.

According to the fire crews the fire was out when they arrived, but they inspected the property before leaving at 8.06pm.

Laura Anderson,a spokesman for Essex Police said: “We were called at 7.50pm by the fire service after reports that a firework was put through a letterbox.

“Police reported that no damage was caused and nobody was injured. Police are treating this as arson and are appealing for anyone with information to call the Tilbury police station on 0300 333 4444 or call Crimestoppers anonymously.

The scumbags that commit this sort of crime are usually not caught, and it is doubtful that we will hear any more about this. But it would be interesting to learn how the police can treat this as arson, when, if the reporting is accurate, "no damage was caused and nobody was injured". Legal dictionaries define arson as "the malicious burning of another's house or property, or in some statutes, the burning of one's own house or property, as to collect insurance." Maybe it will be attempted arson?
