A TRANSPORT minister visited the Dartford Crossing on Monday afternoon.

Mike Penning MP visited the control centre for the crossing to meet senior officials.

The Dartford Crossing was due to be sold by the Labour government, but as last week’s budget revealed this has been put on hold so the Government can hold a review before a final decision is made.

After his visit to the Queen Elizabeth II bridge, Mr Penning said: “I recognise the importance of the Dartford Crossing as a transport link for the national and south east economies. It has, and continues to bring, huge benefits, which is why there is such a demand to use it.

“But I understand motorists are frustrated by delays at the crossing. I visited the control centre today to speak to key staff and gain a better understanding about the issues the crossing faces.

“We must all work together to tackle congestion for the benefit of local communities and businesses.”

Conservative MP for Thurrock, Jackie Doyle-Price, said: “It is good Mr Penning came to the crossing to see it for himself. I have been lobbying with the MP for Dartford, Gareth Johnson, to have the tolls abolished as they slow down traffic.

“It is good the minister came down because it shows it is being thought about – it is costing our businesses too much and is irritating.”
