Football: Aveley 1 Billericay Town 0

AVELEY put on a solid show to beat the freezing conditions and pick up their second Ryman League Premier Division win in three days.

Top marksman Martin Tuohy's 15th minute strike was the only goal of what was a surprisingly easy win for Rod Stringer's men.

Tuohy volleyed in from close range after an unmarked Ryan Doyle had flicked on Matt Johnson's corner.

Billericay were then the better team for the rest of the first half. Dave Wareham forced a save out of Aveley goalkeeper Ollie Morris-Sanders, who also made two good stops from the lively visiting winger Danny Green.

Green was easily Billericay's biggest threat, but he was well shackled by Sam Holloway at left-back for Aveley.

Those expecting Billericay to launch a second half onslaught were mistaken as, in fact, the home side started the half the better.

Tuohy was denied by a last ditch challenge from Ian Cousins while David Knight also shot just wide from a good position.

On the hour mark, Tuohy should have doubled Aveley's lead when his shot was saved by Town keeper Andy Walker's legs, the ball rebounding onto the post and eventally being hacked clear by Dave McSweeney.

James Baker missed a sitter for Billericay on 62 minutes, heading over when completely unmarked in front of goal from Green's free-kick, after Michael Alaile had been harshly adjudged to have fouled in a dangerous position against his former club.

That was Billericay's only real opportunity though as Aveley showed a solidity in their defending which has, at times, been lacking this season.

In fact it was the home side who went closest to scoring late on, Knight heading a free header wide when well placed in front of goal with just two minutes left.
