Woman was a prisoner in her own home

A MAN who beat his girlfriend and refused to let her leave her own flat has been jailed for two years.

Monsur Uddin, 25, appeared at Southend Crown Court after admitting assaulting a woman in the early hours of July 21 last year.

The court heard Uddin had set upon her after becoming jealous when she received a text message from a male friend, subjecting her to a six-hour ordeal.

Catherine Bradshaw, prosecuting, said: “She says she was shoved to the floor, pinned down to the floor, and struck to the head by Mr Uddin while he had a mobile phone in his hand.

“During this assault she repeatedly asked Mr Uddin to let her go to her mum’s or to hospital. She was not allowed.”

Later, as the woman showered to wash away blood, Uddin came to the bathroom door and said what had happened was her fault.

Miss Bradshaw said: “At one point he picked up a kitchen knife and played with it while blaming her for the incident.

“He continued playing with the knife and stabbed the mattress on the floor of the living room.”

At one point, it was said the girlfriend had contemplated jumping from a window of her second-floor flat in Grays to escape Uddin.

Eventually, after briefly losing consciousness and going to sleep, the woman woke to find Uddin apologising and was able to leave.

The injuries she sustained included multiple bruises to her body, a cut to her head, a black eye and swollen face, and ‘lumps and bumps’ all over her body.

Uddin, of Tollgate Road, Beckton, Newham, East London, had admitted one count of actual bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

Mitigating, Irshad Ahmed Sheikh said the incident was out of character and that Uddin accepted the need to address his drink and drug problems.

Sentencing, Judge John Lodge said the threat of using a knife made the offence more severe.

Uddin was also given a 24-month restraining order banning him from contacting the victim from entering Grays.
