Road deaths drop in borough

THE number of people killed or seriously injured on Thurrock’s roads has fallen again.

Figures released by the Government show the number of serious accidents in the borough has fallen in almost every category over the past 12 months ― and reduced significantly compared to the 1994-98 average.

The number of people killed or seriously injured in Thurrock fell ten per cent in the year to July 2009.

Fatalities have also fallen over the year, from ten to four (a 60 per cent drop) and the number of children killed or seriously hurt is down 27 per cent on the year.

Cllr Neil Rockliffe, Thurrock Council’s Cabinet member for transport, said: “Although these figures are still only provisional, they are very encouraging.

“Thurrock takes road safety very seriously, which is why the council’s Road Safety team was recently highly commended in a national competition.

“The borough includes two major roads ― the M25 and A13 ― where speeds are high, so the drop in casualties is all the more pleasing.

“Despite all the work Thurrock Council does to increase safety on our roads, it also relies on road users to drive sensibly. The fact the figures are falling suggests that drivers are also acting more responsibly too.”
