Work on Orsett Cock traffic lights begins Monday

WORK installing traffic lights on the Orsett Cock Roundabout will start on Monday.

Thurrock Council has decided to install a single set of traffic lights on the Westbound slip road to ease congestion and reduce the number of accidents.

The work was originally due to start on August 24 but was delayed as the council is still carrying out surveys.

The Gazette has received several letters slamming the proposal.

Chadwell St Mary resident Scott Major believes the roundabout is fine as it is without traffic lights.

He said: “It seems as though this council is as fixated with traffic lights as the previous one.

“ The current system works perfectly well as it is.

“Whatever stupid ideas are coming next – remove the security at Grays beach to allow the vandals in? Try and charge people to park at Corringham town centre?

“Oh I forgot they’ve already done all that! My message to the council is simple – stop wasting money and think properly before you act.”

Mr Major thinks that the traffic lights are a waste of money and will end up being taken out of operation like the ones on Sainsbury’s roundabout in Chafford Hundred.

He added: “Have they not learnt from the lights added to the roundabout at Sainsbury’s in Chafford Hundred? Traffic moves much better now they’ve been covered up. “ Thurrock Council spokesperson Spencer Carter said: “"The main installation of traffic lights at the westbound slip-off on the Orsett Cock roundabout will commence on the 14 September, following the required planning that has taken place.

“The lights are being installed to reduce the number of accidents that occur in that spot and to ease congestion.”

I thought we were supposed to be saving energy? why do we need traffic lights at the Orsett **** roundabout? That's why it is a roundabout everyong gives way to the right? not rocket science. The traffic lights at Chafford Hundred have been removed and look how much better it is now - no tail backs at all. I can see the tail backs at the orsett **** building up and the council has only itself to blame. What a total waste of money.

Quite right jb411. The traffic will queue back onto the A13 and the resulting crash will leave a bit more than just glass to clear up.

Well Thurrock Council does what it wants, not what you want. Most likely some plonker in the Council comes from Corringham/Basildon and gets the right aches having to queue a bit to get onto the A1013, and has put it forward in the name of safety, What a load of Bovine waste, every roundabout in the Country has rear end shunts, and it is the driver that causes it. Traffic lights there will not solve anything. It is just another excuse to make a jobsworth's job viable.

Is it not still the case that if the councils highways department doestn't spend it's allocated budget, the budget is then reduced the following year. I also believe that certain government priorities are placed on the money they receive. I think the number one priority is to cripple the flow of traffic to the extent that people just give up travelling by road. I think this is combined with the governments initiative to make public transport so prohibitively expensive that we all just stay at home and thank our blessings that, while we're unemployed, we can at least take comfort in the fact that we're saving huge sums of money on not paying for petrol or public transport which will, at least in the short term, pay for the huge increases in food, gas, electric price increases. Who knows you may even be able to put a few quid by to cushion the blow of the ever increasing number of fines the government are introducing for wearing the wrong colour socks on a Monday and putting banana skins in your rubbish along with the tea bags, we really are inconsiderate ba**22ds. Still as long as it's all for the environment, how can you possibly be against it, unless of course you have a secret desire to destroy the planet and your name is doctor evil. Blimey what a rant.

It might sound like dumb but have the council not learned anything from Lakeside traffic lights? Turn them on Q's Turn them off All Moving. Add the fact this roundabout is used by so many motorbikes i cant see how this is going to make this roundabout safe!!
