Freecycling popularity grows in borough

FREECYCLING household goods is growing in popularity, according to Thurrock West Freecycle.

Membership of Freecycle has reached two million nationwide as the public demonstrate their commitment to re-using and recycling household goods rather than dumping them.

Freecycle is an internet network which links people who have household items they don’t want, to people who need them.

There is no membership fee and the only rules are items have to be legal, appropriate for all ages, and given free.

People in Thurrock have discovered the benefits of using Freecycle, to save money as well as the environment and the local group now has 2942 members.

Jules Greaves from Thurrock West Freecycle said: “Popular items are furniture, “white” goods like washing machines, fridges, microwaves, toys, prams, computers, stereos, gardening and DIY tools.

“Everyone has unwanted possessions and people say it is very satisfying to pass something on to someone who needs it rather than throw it away.”

I am glad this locally run website has had a mention because i use it and i think it is a brilliant idea, especially these days with the economy the way it is. I have given away a double bed on this group and a lawnmower when we upgraded ours. It kept us from taking them to the tip as there wasn't anything wrong with them! We have also applied for items from this group too what other residents of Thurrock have been giving away. We applied for a garden parasol and a some garden toys for our kids. All i can say is that if you are not a member of this group already then why not? You will become addicted to it as we have and it keeps all your unwanted things out of the tip too and it's a really good way to meet your neighbours as well! Brilliant idea. Lisa xx

Hiya Lisa, I'm Jules and i help to run this website with Martin. I am really pleased you are enjoying your freecycling experience with us at Thurrock Freecycle. We have almost 3000 local members now and would always welcome more. Remember it's free to join and to use and everything you offer has to be free and you can find us here: www.thurrockwestfree

I've given so many things away on the group and it has been a great way to declutter my house without having to add to the landfill sites. Keeping it local means a lot to us too as helping out your own community gives you a very good feeling whilst saving everyone some cash by being able to reuse the things we already have and like you say, being able to meet with neighbours too. It's a good way to do our bit for the local landfill and the community of Thurrock. Any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch with either myself or Martin, the telephone numbers are in the article. Best wishes, Jules x
