Three-bin system to be rolled out later this year

COUNCILLORS have backed plans to bring in a three-bin waste collection system later this year.

Plans for increasing Thurrock’s recycling rates to 60 per cent in the next decade have been agreed by members of the council’s Cabinet.

Members backed a series of policies for bringing in the council’s three-bin waste collection system later this year.

They were told residents would start receiving the extra two wheelie bins in September in a programme which should finish before Christmas.

Most homes in the borough will receive blue wheelie bins for dry recyclable material (to replace the blue box) and brown ones for garden and kitchen waste. The current green or grey bins will be used for what is left.

Speaking after the meeting, portfolio holder for Environment, Cllr Mike Revel said: “The introduction of the three-bin programme has many effects. “Some homes cannot deal with three bins, some families are too large to be able to have a single residual bin and some residents, unfortunately, will ignore recycling and expect the rest of us to pay for their laziness in increased landfill taxes and therefore increased council tax.

“We have come up with a series of policies which should address all these issues and tonight we have agreed to launch a series of policies to cover various eventualities.”

Some homes, mid-terrace with no rear access and no front garden, those with more than two steps from the curtilage to the bin storage area, and those which cannot be accessed by a refuse collection vehicle may be granted an exemption, subject to a site assessment.

In cases where exemptions are granted, the council will supply, free of charge, black sacks for non-recyclables and blue sacks for dry-recyclables. The kitchen/garden waste service will not be available.

The aim of introducing the new collection system is to dramatically cut the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

I totally agree with you! There is no way that I can fit 3 bins at the front of my house! Also what a horrible sight that will be!
