Thurrock Learning Campus opens for first ever art and media exhibition

PAPER mache animals took over the Thurrock Learning Campus as part of its first ever end of year exhibition, recently.

Zoo animals, including a penguin, bear, dinosaur, gorilla and lion, were featured alongside a host of other work, including advertising, printmaking and artists books.

Charlotte Knowlden, 17, of Stanford-le-Hope, made a paper mache penguin.

She said: “The recycled zoo was our final major project and took me around four weeks to complete.

“We had to do a lot of research into the actual animals so I now have a new found respect for them.”

She added: “Everyone really enjoyed the challenge of the project in bringing something 3D to life.

“A member of staff even liked mine, which was based on the look of the characters from the film Happy Feet, so much that she wanted to buy it.”

Visitors also saw a poster campaign for an imaginary war movie, a promo video for a local metal band, a campaign to raise awareness of the issue of bullying, a podcast covering reviews, events and local unsigned bands and alternative advertising campaigns.

Lecturer in Art and Design at the Thurrock Learning Campus, Joanne McAree, said: “The students really excelled in their Final Major Project.

“They showed great determination and all those that visited the exhibition were truly amazed by how well they had done.”

Thurrock Council were so impressed by the animals that they will be borrowing the Recycled Zoo for the forthcoming Orsett Show on Saturday September 5.
