Pedal power pair top up charity

A PAIR of adventurous cycling enthusiasts have returned from a 950 mile charity ride from Lands End to John O'Groats.

Thurrock man Frank Risby, 64, and workmate Peter Plucknett, 52, of Hertfordshire, embarked on their journey on May 1 and spent 20 days riding the length of Britain from Lands end in Cornwall to John O'Groats in Scotland.

They were inspired by Paul Slaters book entitled "Bike Britain" but added a few of there own routes along the way.

Frank, of Colville Close, Corringham, said: "The trip went very well and we were amazed by people's generosity along the way.

"We also managed to finish 24 hours ahead of schedule.

"All the money raised, which is currently at £2,500, will go to the Alzheimer's Society.

"We chose the charity because my mother in law suffers from it and so did Peter's mother before she passed away."

Although their day jobs, working in the Welwyn and Hatfield Borough Council took up much of their time, they were able to train hard for six months in the gym and go on long bike rides for practice.

Frank added: "It was hard for the first seven days but after that our bodies seemed to get used to it."

The pair slept in bed and breakfast hotels and hostels along the way to keep costs down.

Among their sponsors were Country Properties, National Car Rental and AFR Limited.
